Hagar Banished: Departing from the Latin Galen and its Arabic Sources in the Aldine Edition.Glen M. Cooper - 2012 - Early Science and Medicine 17 (6):604-642.
The Aldine edition of Galen’s works, prepared by humanists anxious to replace the medieval Latin translations with a purely Greek text, certainly represents an advance in scholarship. However, widespread anti-Arabic prejudices of the time precluded most humanists, including the Aldine editors, from perceiving anything of value in the Latin Galenic textual tradition, which was characterized as representing a Galen that had passed through the corrupting influence of Arabic. This paper considers the cost to the medical tradition of ignoring Arabic in (...)

Rational and Empirical Medicine in Ninth-Century Baghdad: Qusṭā Ibn Lūqā's Questions on the Critical Days in Acute Illnesses.Glen M. Cooper - 2014 - Arabic Sciences and Philosophy 24 (1):69-102.

The integrative memory model is detailed, but skimps on false memories and development.Glen E. Bodner & Daniel M. Bernstein - 2019 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 42.
The integrative memory model combines five core memory systems with an attributional system. We agree with Bastin et al. that this melding is the most novel aspect of the model. But we await further evidence that the model's substantial complexity informs our understanding of false memories or of the development of recollection and familiarity.

Cultural Economics and Theory: The Evolutionary Economics of David Hamilton.David Hamilton, Glen Atkinson, William M. Dugger & William T. Waller Jr (eds.) - 2009 - Routledge.
David Hamilton is a leader in the American institutionalist school of heterodox economics that emerged after WWII. This volume includes 25 articles written by Hamilton over a period of nearly half a century. In these articles he examines the philosophical foundations and practical problems of economics. The result of this is a unique institutionalist view of how economies evolve and how economics itself has evolved with them. Hamilton applies insight gained from his study of culture to send the message that (...)

Choose, choose, choose, choose, choose, choose, choose: Emerging and prospective research on the deleterious effects of living in consumer hyperchoice. [REVIEW]David Glen Mick, Susan M. Broniarczyk & Jonathan Haidt - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 52 (2):207-211.
The ideology of consumption and the imperative of consumer choice have washed across the globe. In today's developed economies there is an ever-increasing amount of buying, amidst an ever-increasing amount of purchase options, amidst an ever-increasing amount of stress, amidst an ever-decreasing amount of discretionary time. This brief essay reviews research suggesting, for example, that hyperchoice confuses people and increases regret, that hyperchoice is initially attractive but ultimately unsatisfying, and that hyperchoice is psychologically draining. Future research is then discussed, including (...)

McBride, Glen I was brought up a good Anglican boy by two non-religious parents. My mother was probably an incipient feminist. I knew my father better but never heard him discuss anything religious. At 19, I arrived in England, a bookworm in the RAAF and discovered George Bernard Shaw in perhaps the most exciting mind-opening time of my life. He introduced me to the word 'agnostic' and made it clear that no one had anything worth saying for or against (...)

A crisis continues to brew within the pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) enterprise: productivity continues declining as costs rise, despite ongoing, often dramatic scientific and technical advances. To reverse this trend, we offer various suggestions for both the expansion and broader adoption of modeling and simulation (M&S) methods. We suggest strategies and scenarios intended to enable new M&S use cases that directly engage R&D knowledge generation and build actionable mechanistic insight, thereby opening the door to enhanced productivity. What M&S requirements (...)

Hutton and Werner Compared: George Greenough's Geological Tour of Scotland in 1805.M. J. S. Rudwick - 1962 - British Journal for the History of Science 1 (2):117-135.
George Greenough was one of the influential group of early nineteenth-century English geologists who rejected both Hutton's and Werner's attempts to propound all-embracing geological theories, and followed a deliberately empirical approach. He travelled through Scotland in 1805, studying geological phenomena in the light of both the Plutonist and the Neptunist theories, and generally concluded that neither was entirely satisfactory as an explanation of the observable facts. He was also the first to suggest that the ‘Parallel Roads’ of Glen Roy (...)

Engaging Dōgen's Zen: the philosophy of practice as awakening.Jason M. Wirth, Brian Schroeder & Bret W. Davis (eds.) - 2016 - Somerville, MA: Wisdom Publications.
How are the teachings of a thirteenth-century master relevant today? Twenty contemporary writers unpack Dogen's words and show how we can still find meaning in his teachings. Engaging Dogen's Zen is a practice oriented study of Shushogi (a canonical distillation of Dogen's thought used as a primer in the Soto School of Zen) and Fukanzazengi (Dogen's essential text on the practice of "just sitting," a text recited daily in the Soto School of Zen). It is also a study of the (...)

Taking Turns with Fritsch: On Intergenerational Time and Space.Jason M. Wirth - forthcoming - Etica & Politica / Ethics & Politics.
This is an appreciative examination of Matthias Fritsch’s significant new book, Taking Turns with the Earth: Phenomenology, Deconstruction, and Intergenerational Justice (Stanford, 2018). After analyzing the temporal axis of Fritsch’s intervention into the question of intergenerational justice in the context of the ecological crisis, I extend it to a complementary spatial analysis by following some of the book’s important cues. I develop this in terms of some recent North American Indigenous philosophy, including Winona LaDuke, Glen Sean Coulthard, and Leanne (...)

Relative Vaught's Conjecture for Some Meager Groups.Ludomir Newelski - 2007 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 48 (1):115-132.
Assume G is a superstable locally modular group. We describe for any countable model M of Th(G) the quotient group G(M) / Gm(M). Here Gm is the modular part of G. Also, under some additional assumptions we describe G(M) / Gm(M) relative to G⁻(M). We prove Vaught's Conjecture for Th(G) relative to Gm and a finite set provided that ℳ(G) = 1 and the ring of pseudoendomorphisms of G is finite.

The emphasis in this collection is clearly on logic, and this is one reason why it lacks the overall diversity and richness of the 1960 Stanford volume. However, the eight sections do contain much interesting material; in the mathematical logic section Kochen and Specker continue their study of logics appropriate for quantum theory, Vaught presents several new results about the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem, and Büchi studies second-order ordinal theory from the viewpoint of automata theory; the section on foundations of mathematical (...)

Although this excellent introductory and intermediate level text is intended for students of mathematics, it could serve well in any course for philosophers on that level. The first two chapters present the propositional and predicate calculi, along with an informal discussion of some of the set-theoretic concepts needed to study logic. The third chapter discusses what exactly an axiomatic system is, and examples of various mathematical systems cast in axiomatic form are provided; the discussion here, as elsewhere in the book, (...)

    What’s Wrong with Restrictivism?William M. Simkulet - 2024 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 33 (2):296-299.
Emily Carroll and Parker Crutchfield propose a new inconsistency argument against abortion restrictivism. In response, I raised several objections to their argument. Recently Carroll and Crutchfield have replied and seem to be under the impression that I’m a restrictivist. This is puzzling, since my criticism of their view included a very thinly veiled, but purposely more charitable, anti-restrictivist inconsistency argument. In this response, I explain how Carroll and Crutchfield mischaracterize my position and that of the restrictivist.

We prove that this algebra is an atomic Boolean algebra while its Gödel numeration γ is a [Formula: see text]-numeration. Moreover, the quotient algebra /ℱ, γ/ℱ) modulo the Fréchet ideal ℱ is a [Formula: see text]-algebra, which is universal over the class of all [Formula: see text] Boolean algebras. Medieval interpretations of hylomorphism, in which substances are conceived as metaphysical composites of prime matter and substantial form, are receiving attention in contemporary philosophy. It has even been suggested that a recovery of Aquinas's conception of prime matter as a ‘pure potentiality’, lacking any actuality apart from substantial form, may be expedient in hylomorphic interpretations of quantum mechanics. In this paper, we consider a recent hylomorphic interpretation of non-relativistic quantum mechanics, the theory of Cosmic Hylomorphism, which does not explicitly invoke (...)
